Basics

Character Name: The Doctor/ The Tenth Doctor

Age: Approximately 903 years old, though his physical age is about mid-30’s.
Species: Time Lord.
Sexuality: Straight, presumably.
Appearance: The Doctor’s Tenth regeneration is rather tall and lanky. The fact that he is quite the formidable opponent, one who has fought against and defeated many enemies, is not at all obvious given his skinny and less than intimidating frame. His outfit of choice usually consists of a smart pinstripe suit, in brown or blue, along with his various pairs of Converse sneakers and signature brown duster jacket.

Personality

For such a powerful being, the Doctor has a surprisingly chipper attitude the majority of the time. Though his personality will vary from regeneration to regeneration, this version is extremely talkative and wordy, and he often makes jokes while in the midst of seemingly dire situations. He isn’t particularly humble, often pointing out how just how very clever he is (which isn’t unjustified, as he’s nothing less than a brilliant man who can find the most unlikely solutions to the most hopeless of problems), although he expresses a certain dismay when he behaves in any way that could be considered “rude.” He also happens to be an incredibly compassionate individual. He only resorts to violence when it’s his last remaining option, and he never carries a gun or a weapon of any kind (his sonic screwdriver is not a weapon, though it can be indirectly used as one). If you were meeting the Doctor for the first time, your first impression would probably be of a rather hyper, witty man who has quite the way with words, and who can be devastatingly charming when the moment calls for it. He can also be deeply serious and intense when the situation calls for it, and the situation often does. Despite his seemingly limitless energy and enthusiasm, he is very aware of the big picture and his vital place in it as a guardian of Time.

Abilities

While the Doctor would still retain his brilliant mind and its reserves of knowledge, he will be without his TARDIS and sonic screwdriver. Without the TARDIS, he will be unable to travel in space and time, and therefore will be unable to leave this world, obviously. The sonic screwdriver can open anything except a deadlock seal, and it has many other uses as a tool, but obviously he will not have it with him. The Doctor is quite skilled when it comes to any piece of technology, so he won’t exactly be left helpless; but although he is an alien with two hearts and a Time Lord mind, which means he does have telepathic abilities, he does not have any “superpowers” as such.

Weaknesses

He has lived through so much and has gone through so many regenerations that while he is physically quite young, his mental state is occasionally one of a war-weary traveler who has seen too much, done too much, and who has been forced to make too many hard decisions. The personality of his current regeneration is usually very optimistic and lively, but from time to time he will succumb to this weariness. The knowledge of everything he has done – all the deaths he has caused, all the people who were loyal to him and have died for him – is a weight that is constantly on his shoulders.

The responsibility of being a protector of time is also a weight he is forced to carry; he does what he has to do to protect the innocent (usually Earth and its human inhabitants) no matter the cost, and every now and then he needs someone to reign him in.

He is haunted by the fact that he has lived for hundreds of years and, most likely, will continue to live on by regenerating rather than ever actually dying. Because of this aspect of a Time Lord’s physiology, he often feels that he will live his life eternally alone. No companion or friend will ever be able to accompany him forever; death or simply old age will inevitably end their journey with him, while he will live on. He has had to replace his “companions” so often that at times he seems a bit jaded to this fact; he accepts it as a fact of life and has been known to overlook the feelings of his previous companions, as is seen when he reunites with Sarah Jane Smith. It is a flaw of his personality that he so resigned to this.

It is also possibly his most debilitating weakness that, for this same reason, he feels constantly alone. When he does form a strong emotional attachment to one of his companions, like he does with Rose Tyler, he is, in a way, making a sacrifice. As he tells her, she can spend her whole life with him if she so desires, but he can’t do the same for her. He will outlive her; it is not a guess or a suspicion, but a fact. And so even when he is with someone, he is alone, because he knows he will ultimately lose them. He is perpetually lonely, the last of the Time Lords, and there is no one who can ever fully understand what it is like to face the burden he bears, nor anyone who can ever fully ease that burden.

History

The Doctor is the last of the Time Lords (with the exception of The Master, although it is assumed that he is now deceased), a race that all but died out when their home planet, Gallifrey, was destroyed in the Time War. The Doctor spends his life traveling through the universe and through time, almost always accompanied by a companion. The Tenth Doctor started his life with Rose Tyler, whom he had traveled with as the Ninth Doctor. He becomes romantically attached to her, which proves to be devastating for him when she is forced to remain in a parallel world and they are separated for the first time. Following that, he has also journeyed with an aspiring medical doctor, Martha Jones, and a temp from Chiswick, Donna Noble, although he is forced to part with all of them and always seems to end up entirely alone. As he puts it, it is the curse of a Time Lord to see what has happened in time, what will happen, what should happen, and what must not happen; and so it’s very often his duty to save certain time lines and worlds from being disrupted by hostile forces.
